Enter through the iron gate into the yard and take the door to the right leading to the Church Hall.
The Nearly New Shop is to the left just inside the doorway.

THE NEARLY NEW SHOP After 20 years still 'at your service'

S. Matthew’s (Big Lamp, Summerhill)  Nearly New Shop was originally set up twenty years ago to provide money to help with  an extensive church fabric appeal which was taking place at that time.  After a  successful  conclusion to the appeal, it was decided to keep the shop operating,  as  parishioners discovered that it had developed a useful social as well as economic function.

Originally trading from a former funeral parlour in Summerhill Street,  McGee& Beckett, (unofficial slogan ‘We’ll get you in the end’),  the Nearly New Shop eventually moved to more spacious premises adjoining the Church Hall, underneath the south aisle of the church building itself.
There is a steady turn over of bargains.  Customers are able to obtain a wide range of quality clothes, also bedding, curtains, small household goods, books, CDs and Collectables.  Regulars  like to pop in to see what is newly arrived and new customers are always surprised by the wide range of goods for sale. Both old and new clients say they are impressed and amazed by the quality on frequently offer and the Shop's competitive prices.  Not only does it provide the opportunity for people to purchase good quality clothes and bedding etc. at highly affordable prices, but it provides a place for conversation  and to enjoy some company and friendship.  Customers  come come to us from far and near. All are valued.

The shop is staffed by a group of committed volunteers  from the congregations  of both  S. Matthew’s and S. Philip’s,  who serve each week, and in addition  meet to do pricing, sorting and updating.  Turnover of stock is important to attract and sustain the interest of the customers, who are very aware if items have been on sale for a period of time. Many members of the congregation along with their friends and families, and those in the neighbourhood,  are generous in donating stock to sell. Larger amounts of donated goods are collected from further afield, (eg. Hexham area, Whitley Bay, Monkseaton, Otterburn) via contacts which have been established with some other churches in the diocese, and collection can be arranged throughout Tyneside, Northumberland and North Durham. Nothing is wasted or thrown away as unsold goods are ‘recycled’ through other charities and refuges.

  • We always require new stock - good quality clothes, bedding, or household items, or smaller items of furniture  (eg coffee tables, stools etc)
  • Please contact us via the shop email or by telephoning 01912735103.
  • If you intend to bring stock yourself, it is always worthwhile letting us know by phone or email when you intend to come, so we can give a recent update on opening times, and ensure that there are helpers present, to assist with unloading.
